Series: Steins; gate
Studio: White Fox
Genre: suspense, science fiction
Steins;gate is a science fiction anime adapted from a visual novel that was released for XBOX 360 in 2009. In 2011 White Fox made the adaptation releasing until September of the same year and, thereafter, more games and adaptations came out, being the last series emitting in 2018 with the title Steins;gate 0.
The story happens in Akihabara, Japan and it focuses on the protagonist: Rintaro Okabe and his friends, Mayuri Shiina and Itaru Hasida, who modifies a microwave that turns into a machine that can send messages to the past. While they’re investigating the phenomenon, they find Kurisu Makise, a prodigious young woman who joins the team. However, in the moment that they realize the experiments, an organization, called SERN, appears. They have been conducting researches about time traveling and discover that group of friends. The character’s goal it’s to find the way to not being captivated by SERN.
A Little resume about the characters
Okabe (called Okarin by Mayuri) is a young man who has 18 years old and is a little bit particular. He defines his self as a “mad scientist” and he consider that his department it’s a secret bunker where he and his friends do scientific experiments.
Accidentally, Okabe makes of his microwave a kind of telephone that can make “D-mails”, that is: messages to the past. From there, and for not having consequences being captured by SERN, that “mad scientist” will alternate the past looking for all his friends to have a good future. Despite this, long-term results will not be good and Rintaro will have to find solutions and return everything to normal.
Mayuri (called Mayushii too) is a childhood friend of the protagonist and her attitude is kind of childish, but she is a perceptive girl that can detect things that others can’t do and, also, she can understand others feelings. She is dedicated to making “cosplays”, to work in a “maid cafe” and, within the team of investigation; she is in charge of feeding everyone.
Mayuri Shiina is a girl whom Okabe has a great appreciation for and always wants to protect, especially since her grandmother died. The new time travel adventures will not be a minor topic to find all the tools at his disposal to save her.
Kurisu (called Kuristina by Okabe) is a young neuroscientist investigator. She is super talented and smart, which has allowed her to go to the best laboratories in the USA. She graduated in the same University where later started to work. Kurisu Makise is a direct person; she is serious, mature, has a strong character and she analyzes everything, because in the USA people treated her with suspicion for her youngness. However, it believes that under her strong shield there is an innocent, kind, curious and shy girl.
Inside the laboratory, she will be a key member for the investigation and, also, she will be a character that Okabe will hold a special affection, making him want to save her from all the bad results too.
Itaru (also called Daru) is a hacker with a big experience and a closer friend of Rintaro Okabe. Inside the web he calls himself as “DaSh” (Daru the super Hacker) and Barrel Titor. He is extreme obsessed and talented with computers, programs, hacks and processing complex codes. Itaru enjoys making experiments with his friend, but he is not as much as enthusiast as Okabe.
Finally, I will name Suzuha Amane, a character that not belongs to the laboratory but I think it’s important too. She is a time traveler who comes of the year 2036 and seeks to prevent the SERN organization from creating a time machine that will lead the world to a dystopia where they rule and take away all freedom of expression.
Steins;gate is a series that, perhaps, at the beginning, can be boring for those who are used to see things where everything happens fast and with a lot of action. In this anime you need to pay attention to every detail and every scene that will each thread of the story and unite all the time jumps. But, once all the introductory chapters are passed, you will be enter fully into the story and you will need to see every chapter for knowing what is going to happen.
Stains;gate it’s a very well made fiction, in which your mind will never stop being active, both while viewing and afterwards.
A positive point that I attribute to the series is the charisma of the characters. Each one gives a special touch to the plot, making you laugh in some moments and ending with emotional scenes. Okabe adds a lot of humor to the series but, at the same time, you can connect with him and you will love watching all his development. Besides that, his laughing mind is balanced with the actions and thoughts of his friends, who have important places, making them not to being just simple characters.
Another feature that I personally loved is the type of animation and the soundtrack, especially the opening and the ending that have details in which the song changes depending on every time line and the context of the characters.
Finally, without going into too much details, I think that both the movie (Steins;gate Fuka Ryouiki no déjà vu) and Steins;gate 0, were a good continuation of the first season. The movie is more dramatic and serious, here disappears the comedy touch and in it will be seen a psychological consequence of the Seins;gate events.
In Steins; gate Zero follows the dark plot where there is a deconstruction in regards to the first season and a dichotomy between past and present. Here the characters have other versions, more gray and dramatic, that will make us understand many reasons why things have ended one way and not another.
Do I recommend Steins;gate?
Beyond it being one of my favorites animes, I totally recommend this, but with a special warning that, perhaps, It’s not for everyone because it can be a little slow at the beginning and you need to keep you attention just in the screen and with your mind active. However, if you give it a try and watch it all complete you will want to know how the story will continue in the other parts and you will love it.
